whether or not it is a drop repeat, for with a long repeat there is often more waste in cutting than where the repeat is moderate in length. In Fig. 7, for instance, the repeat is entirely too long for econOTny. Had the lozenge form been turned to a horizontal position it would have been much more advantageous.

25. The Multl-Symmetrical nepeating Pattern.
Perhaps the most suitable of all repeating patterns for carpets is the multi-symmetrical repeating pattern. The process of evolving such a pattern is shown in Fig. 9. Suppose the width of the carpet strip to be 27 inches, as it is in Brussels carpet. This would be represented by line a c in view (b). An isosceles right-angle triangle would then be laid out, as a & c in (b). If comer a is considered the point from which all lines will grow, then any kind of a pattern may be drawn within this right-angled triangle.
With such a simple pattern as the leaf and scroll growth shown in (b), an interesting multi-symmetrical pattern can be formed as follows: Considering a as the central point of a large design to be fomied, place triangle abc oi view (b) in the position shown by abc in view (a). Then the triangle with its decorative motifs is folded over on the line a c as an axis, tuitil it takes the position a c bi. In practical work, the process would be to make a tracing of abc and then reverse it on line a c and transfer it reversed so as to become triangle acbi. A new decorative form, perfectly symmetrical, is then formed at abc bi. The resulting ornament may then be folded over again, this time on line a fci as an axis, to form a repeated section at a bi ci bt. Again the resulting decoration may be folded over, on line b bt, and reduplicated at bt, ct, 63. cj, b, thus filling the entire square c ci cj ct with symmetrical decoration, all of which seems to radiate from center a. But the process described above does not conclude the repeating, or multi-symmetrical, possibilities of the simple decorative details shown in triangle abc. Triangle actc may be repeated by folding the triangle over cm line cj c, thus making triangle cj a, c. Similarly, triangles cciOt, CiCja^, and ciCjtu may be formed. This completes the entire square a, oj Oj a^ which in turn may be repeated indefinitely on all four sides by folding over, in turn, on axes a^ ot, oj aj, 03 at. and Oi a\.
A strong advantage of this multi-symmetrical repeating pattern is that it is an ideal one for a floor covering pattern. No matter from what direction it is viewed, or from what angle, the carpet jjattcm in such a scheme will appear to be
